About Me…

Paula Cox MRSLI, MASLI
PG Dip BSL/English Interpreting
With years of
experience of working with children and the Deaf community it was by chance
that Paula stumbled across the research by Joseph Garcia and realised that she
had already been signing with her baby and reaping the benefits.
She had
started to learn to sign in 1995 at her local evening class and would go home
and practice what she’d learnt.
Her daughter
Sunny was 18 months old at the time and would sit and watch her repeating the
signs.
Sunny was a
massive fan of the Tellytubbies and one day said “Tubby Bye Byes” and showed
the sign for goodnight! – Paula was amazed!
It became a
great game between the two of them and the time they spent together signing
gave them a really special bond.
Paula wishes
she had started sooner – especially during that agonising first year when they
cry with frustration because they can’t tell you what the problem is.
The benefits
of baby signing weren’t well publicised at that time, but after reading Joseph
Garcia’s SIGN with your BABY™ programme Paula became really motivated
as she recognized that signing had really had a hand in helping Sunny’s ability
to express herself. Now at 11 years old Sunny has absolutely no problems with
spoken language and is an articulate, bright, confident little girl.
Sunny Signers was born because of
Paula’s enthusiasm for the SIGN with your BABY™ programme and
her determination to spread the word to other parents and carers.
In addition to Sunny Signers Paula works
as a freelance sign language interpreter and has recently completed a
Postgraduate Diploma in BSL/English Interpreting.
